40% drop-off rates for support workers: what's really happening in your application process

Garth Quinn Jul 2, 2026

A recent analysis of applicant drop-off rates for one of Australia's largest aged care providers turned up a striking finding: 40% of candidates who started an application never finished it.

Support workers are in high demand across both aged care and NDIS. That makes this kind of drop-off especially costly. Providers are doing the hard work of getting a candidate interested, then losing them to obstacles the application process itself created.

What that drop-off actually costs

The talent acquisition team couldn't meet business targets. Growth was constrained, not by demand, but by the organisation's own process. Clients were not receiving the care they needed, because the workforce to deliver it wasn't coming through.

What to change

Remove the barriers to entry in the application process. Build a candidate experience that holds from first click to first shift. Let technology carry its share of the load. Automation and smarter tooling reduce the friction that causes drop-off in the first place.

If 40% of interested candidates are abandoning the process before it's even finished, the constraint isn't the candidate market. It's what happens between "interested" and "hired."
